What is Individual Therapy?


All therapeutic relationships are different from each other and therefore proceed in a customized way. Usually there are certain schools of therapy that psychologists are influenced by and trained in, but in many cases, specialists may use a combination of different methods.

There is no standard method that works for everyone. The client's difficulties can be a guide in this regard. Especially in the first sessions, the psychologist needs time to get to know you and take your history. It is helpful to be as open as possible and to share your thoughts and feelings as much as possible. Experts listen to you without judgment and with interest, do not criticize and show compassion.

In some therapy approaches, you may receive training on coping methods, stress management, relaxation methods, etc. that will be useful for your daily life. In some approaches, you may be asked to do some exercises between sessions that may be beneficial for your development.

Individual therapy is a process in which the client and a trained psychologist work together in a safe environment, protecting confidentiality, about a behavior, thought or attitude that causes the client discomfort therefore the client wants to change. For this reason, it is very important to trust the practitioner and to feel comfortable with him/her. The client may have personal, social or professional difficulties.

The progress and speed of each client is different from each other, this is a subjective process and it would not be right to generalize it. Sometimes it is possible to leave the sessions feeling relaxed and lighter, sometimes with negative feelings.

These are expected stages of the therapy process. Whether it is stressful life changes, relationship and communication difficulties or emotional ups and downs, you have the capacity to get to a better place with the support of an expert.

Your psychologist should approach you ethically, show respect, listen attentively and actively, provide honest feedback, and all the while mobilize you for change and transformation. If, despite meeting these conditions, you do not feel safe in the session, you can bring this up with your psychologist and tell him/her that you would like to continue the session with someone else.
